“You’re Too Stupid To Live” Young Man Scorned After Tossing Endangered Sea Turtle Into The Air

One young man’s stupidity has got the better of him, subsequently landing him in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

Thinking that a couple of boastful selfies harassing a green sea turtle would get him praises from fellow friends, Indonesian, Yudi Prawira, who was on vacation at Maratua Island, the Turtle Capital of Indonesia in East Kalimantan, only received scorned instead.

Yudi’s disgusting actions posted to Instagram August 2015 not only showed him touching the turtle and propping it up, but tossing the reptile in the air, which recently sent netizens’ bloods boiling after being reposted by user Geafry Necolsen S A, on Facebook, on July 7.

Geafry simply wrote: “Please don’t do this to beautifull [sic] turtle”.

A majority of netizens spewed hatred calling Yudi “stupid” and an “idiot” among other names, with others calling for action against his inhumane act.

Due to the overwhelming pressure after his photos went viral, checks show that Yudi had removed the photos online.

Amir Hamidy staff of Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense, Research Centre for Biology, Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI) pointed out how Yudi’s inappropriate behaviour toying with turtles is certainly forbidden as turtles are different from pets such as cats or dogs.

“It is no allowed. Sea turtles are not animals to be tamed, it is not a pet but a wild and protected animal. So we cannot treat them like pets,” Amir told kumparan.com, yesterday.

He further emphasised on the ethics when visiting a tourist attraction or a wildlife sanctuary.

“There are ethics in treating wildlife and all visitors should know their boundaries and abide by the rules. Even feeding wild animals can lead to behavioural change, what more manhandling them,” he said, adding that it could make the animal stressed, affect its metabolism and be at risk to diseases.

Aside the young man’s vile actions, Amir also put the blame on the island’s management for their negligence and lack of attentiveness in managing the situation.

“The management should be able to take action. There should be SOPs in place to manage such situations, especially the interaction between people and wildlife. It should not be allowed because it can stress these animals,” he asserted.

Sadly, Yudi is not the only person who has mistreated the sea turtles as Geafry’s account also reveals other visitors of the island have acted disgustingly, proudly sitting and riding on sea turtles’ backs, disgracefully posing and smiling all for likes.

Nearly all species of sea turtles are classified as endangered due to human activities, and Maratua Island is reportedly the nesting ground where the green sea turtles return each year to lay their eggs.

With climate change already impacting turtle nesting sites, such inhumane acts by irresponsible individuals will only lessen sea turtles’ chances of surviving in this world.
