Thailand: Mourners Stay Until Sunday

BANGKOK: Many remain to mourn the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and wait for the final royal procession of honour on Sunday, which will be part of ceremonies related to the royal cremation, Thai News Agency (TNA) reported, told Bernama.

As the royal processions to transfer the royal relics and ashes of the late King Bhumibol from the royal crematorium to the Grand Palace were concluded, many mourners left the venue. However, many others stayed to absorb the atmosphere of the historical event in honour of the late revered king whose reign last 70 years.

Those remain will witness the sixth royal procession of honour that will carry the royal ashes from the Temple of the Emerald Buddha to Wat Ratchabophit and Wat Bowonniwet.

Bangkok officials and volunteers were removing tents and cleaning streets to facilitate public transport. Police reopened all roads in the vicinity of the cremation venue except some temporary road closures for royal motorcades. Bus services on Ratchadamnoen Nok and Ratchadamnoen Klang roads resume.

Most guests at local hotels checked out. Only some of them extended their stay to wait for the public opening of the royal crematorium on Nov 2-30 where people will be able to learn more about the ceremony.

The exhibition will feature arts and culture regarding the Royal Crematorium and related structures.

Pissa Paikaew, reception manager of Royal Rattanakosin Hotel, said 30 per cent of guests had not checked out and that most guests who had reserved rooms did not stay overnight at the hotel but remained in Sanam Luang. They only kept their valuables at the hotel, she said.
