Malaysians lost more than RM100m to get-rich-quick schemes this year

KUALA LUMPUR : Police have received more than 400 reports involving get-rich-quick schemes, worth more than RM100 million in the first quarter of this year.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Seri Mortadza Nazarene said 485 police reports were lodged from Jan until June this year, with losses amounting to RM116,116,657.68.

“In 2014, we received 289 reports worth RM53,517,630.73, whereas in 2015, the numbers increased to 591 cases worth RM134,996,703.91

“The statistic show an increase in the monetary amount worth, specifically RM81,489,073.18, or 152 per cent, compared to records in Jan to Dec 2014 and 2015,” he said.

Mortadza said investigation conducted by the department shows that public tend to fall prey to this scheme as they were lured by the high returns from their investment. -nst
