Cops retrieve body of man who fell off second Penang bridge

NIBONG TEBAL: Police have recovered a body believed to be that of the man who fell from the second Penang bridge two days ago.

The body of Mohd Shukri Saad, 39, was recovered at about 9am Friday, about four kilometres away from the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge still fully clothed and with a backpack on.

The authorities are still waiting for post-mortem reports from the Sungai Bakap Hospital to confirm the victim’s identity.

It was reported that Mohd Shukri from Lahar Yooi in Tasek Gelugor had stopped his motorcycle at the 11th kilometre on the island-bound side of the bridge before the incident at about 8.30am Wednesday.

A motorcycle, a pair of slippers, a helmet and a mobile phone were found at the scene.

Other motorists who witnessed the incident alerted the police, and a search and rescue operation was launched immediately with the help of all the relevant authorities, including the deployment of a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) helicopter to assist in the operation.

It is believed that Mohd Shukri had penned a letter on his Facebook account before he fell from the bridge. His post was widely circulated on social media.

In the post, the sundry shop owner apologised to family members and expressed his regret over the criminal action taken against him for selling contraband cigarettes.
