Tussle for state DAP number one spot serious

The overcast skies over Ipoh for the last few days could indicate rainy or stormy days to come.

Although it may end up to be just wet spells where the weather is concerned, ‘storms’ are for sure brewing up in the political scene when it comes to DAP.

Despite state party secretary, Nga Kor Ming’s statement today assuring that competition for posts are gentlemanly and brotherly, come November14, the public will know how strong the ‘storm’ will be when Perak DAP annual convention sees its 1,200 delegates choosing the party’s state committee.

According to a former Perak DAPSY committee member, the tumult between the party’s state number one and number two will come to head during the convention.

The issue that sparked the feud was the decision by the party’s state committee not to appoint Ipoh Barat MP, M Kulasegaran or more popularly known as Kula, as its chairman in 2008.

In the state party polls then, Kula garnered the highest votes, whereas the current chairman, Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham was said to be somewhere in the middle of the 15 victorious candidates table.

Kula’s plan to speak his mind about the state DAP situation and announce his resignation from the  party’s post to the press on  October 2  was thwarted after Lim Kit Siang had a word with to not carry on with his intention.

However, talk is rife that the embers of feud is still simmering and awaiting the opportune time to burst into flames.

The party insider Peraknews.com spoke to, also said that he had never seen such a power struggle occurring in the state DAP before.

Now, it seems that the party’s leaders are more concerned about positions rather than really working for the rakyat.

“I joined the DAP in 2004 because I was attracted to its principles of justice, fighting the rights of the rakyat, and serving them.

“But after the big winning in the 12th general election in 2008, I don’t know what happened to the party. Everyone seems to be vying for positions and fighting for personal interests which brought on factions within the state DAP.

“In short, if you are not in a certain faction, you are basically politically dead in DAP,” the insider added, who is also a state assemblyman.

So rampant is the practise, the insider could no longer tolerate the situation and withdrew his party membership recently because he feels he could serve his constituency better as an independent assemblyman.
