IPOH, Feb 15 (Bernama) — Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak Tuesday called on leaders to carry out “improvements” and “repairs” to create a more peaceful, just and equitable atmosphere in the community.

After getting the mandate from the rakyat, he said, leaders should put people first and rise above family and self interests.

The Sultan said the youths today were clearly anxious about the world they see before them which had departed so far from the true leadership values that the Prophet Muhammad had brought.

“They want leaders who are responsible, free of corruption, do not abuse power and do not betray trust,” he said when launching state-level celebrations of the Prophet’s birthday and opening the Medan Klebang Restu Jamek Mosque at Chemor near here.

The Sultan said the restlessness was expressed through the local and international media and “modern channels of communication” and through various movements.

“This will turn to more aggressive action when it (the restlessness” cannot be controlled,” he said, hoping that what was now happening in several countries would serve as a lesson to leaders “who have been given trust by God and have the confidence of the people.”

“The younger generation are independent-spirited and have noble ideals and high expectations .. they are educated and knowledgeable and have critical powers of analysis.

“They can differentiate between glass and jewel, between falsehood and truth, between good and bad ..they also have the courage to take big risks and are ready to accept challenges,” the Sultan said.

Sultan Azlan Shah later performed Zuhur prayers together with Raja Muda Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, Raja Dihilir Raja Jaafar Raja Muda and Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.
