MCA deputy chief Liow denies allegations against him

Liow_c254469__c254470_1215_711KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai has refuted recent allegations against him, including claims that he had approached Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to intervene in the MCA extraordinary general meeting (EGM) set for Sunday.

“MCA can manage its internal matters without interference from any party,” the MCA deputy president said in a press conference here Friday.

Twenty MCA central committee members had proposed for an EGM to be held to censure Liow for various reasons, including his refusal to accept and respect the party’s collective decisions, and failing in his duty as chairman of the general election preparation committee.

Liow also denied two more allegations – of pressuring party president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek to resign from the party and spending RM600,000 of MCA money on trips to Taiwan and China.

“The party president has accused me of causing fractures in the party, but my trips around the country were done openly and I heard the sincere feedback of the grassroots,” said Liow.

He also denied an allegation that he had failed to carry out his duties as the chairman of MCA’s election committee, saying that over the last nine months, he had set up operation rooms in every division and ensured they were communicating with the central committee.

“The delegates will determine the future of the party, and I appeal to all delegates to uphold the party and not to make wild accusations against me.

“I am confident MCA delegates will make the right choice this Sunday. They can hear me for themselves, that I am a sincere leader with no agenda except to serve the party and the people,” said Liow.

On MCA refusing to join the Cabinet or take up government positions, Liow said the decision needed to be re-examined from time to time.

Liow also appealed to MCA delegates to stop making personal allegations against him.

“The delegates will determine the future of the party, and I appeal to all delegates to uphold the party and not to make wild accusations against me,” said Liow.
