GEORGE TOWN: They cancelled their New Year’s Eve joyride because of police roadblocks and held it days later to avoid getting caught.

Still, the attempt by over 400 Mat Rempit and their pillion riders was brought to a halt by police during an operation that lasted for about 10 hours beginning Friday night.

They were flagged down along Miami Beach and made to walk some 2km with their machines to the Batu Ferringhi police station.

It is learnt the group was heading to a rendezvous in front of a hotel in Teluk Bahang for a New Year’s Eve ride, which was called off due to enforcement activities on Dec 31.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said road blocks had been set up in Batu Ferringhi, Tanjung Tokong and in George Town during the operation from 9pm on Friday until 7am yesterday.
