Landslide freezes KL traffic

KUALA LUMPUR: A landslide after a downpour brought traffic heading towards the city centre to a standstill.

The landslide blocked all three lanes and affected traffic along Jalan Mahameru heading towards Jalan Tun Razak, adjacent to Wisma Tani here yesterday.

A Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) enforcement unit spokesman said the 5.30pm incident left space for only motorcycles to pass through.

“Our disaster relief team was on site to clear the debris and soil from the landslide and divert traffic.

“By 6.30pm, one lane was cleared,” he said, adding that no vehicles were trapped in the fallen soil and debris.

Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk Dr Loga Bala Mohan said the landslide was more severe than the one which occurred at the same slope on May 8 last year.

“Once the road is cleared, DBKL will put up a concrete barrier and open the road when it is deemed safe,” he said.

In other parts of the city, flash floods inundated Jalan Ampang, Jalan Raja Chulan and various parts of the Bukit Jalil highway.

Bernama reported that the Malaysian Meteorological Department had issued a warning that strong winds and rough seas would hit several coastal areas from Friday to Jan 13.

The department said the northeast winds would be blowing at a speed of 40kph to 50kph, with waves as high as 3.5m over the coastal waters of Pahang, East Johor, Sarawak, Labuan and Sabah (Interior, West Coast, Kudat and Sandakan).

The same warning was also issued for coastal areas in Tioman, Bunguran, South Reef, Palawan and Sulu.

“The strong winds and rough seas are dangerous to small boats and recreational activities,” the department said.

The coastal areas of Kelantan, Terengganu and Samui were expected to be hit by 50kph winds with waves of 4.5m from tomorrow to Monday.
