Police urged to look into measures to ensure professionalism

PETALING JAYA: Police should create a special module to inculcate discipline and ethics among its officers, says PAS central working committee member Dr Riduan Mohd Nor.

Besides taking action against those who tarnish the image of the force, he said police should look into initiating precautionary measures to ensure that the professionalism and ethics of the men in blue were maintained.

“Why is there no special module to instil and teach police officers to become more dedicated, disciplined, with high moral ethics?” he said in a statement yesterday.

Dr Riduan was commenting on The Star report on Monday on the publication of pictures on social media sites of two patrolmen, allegedly showing them in a drunken stupor inside the patrol car parked by the roadside.

The pictures, which also showed their sub-machine gun left unguarded on the floor of the rear passenger seat, first surfaced on Facebook on Sunday.

Selangor police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan said the identities of the two officers had been ascertained and they had been reassigned pending investigations.

Dr Riduan urged police to take stern action against the officers shown in the pictures.

“What will happen if they drive while drunk and hit other cars or pedestrians?

“Can you imagine if they had accidentally used their firearms and injured others?” he said.

MyWatch chairman R. Sri San-jeevan said the two officers should have been sacked.

A Netizen by the name of Gopinath Nadarajan said dismissals should be carried out since the officers had made the Malaysian police a laughing stock of the country.

Another Netizen with the tweet handle Salahdin said: “How come @PDRMsia personnel, when get caught for misdemeanour, gets a mere transfer while waiting for a formal charge?”
