Floods: We need volunteers fast, says Muhyiddin

PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin called for more volunteers to come forward to help the flood-hit states during the post-flood period.

He said to get things back to normal during the post-flood period would be very challenging due to extensive damages and the amount of cleaning works needed to be done.

“I am urging all quarters including the private sector to help especially in providing the cleaning equipment to wash off the mud.

“The recent flood, the worst in decades, has caused so much damages estimated in billions of Ringgit and I have instructed the relevant commitees in all flood-hit states to calculate the damages so that we can see the impact of the flood on the nation and decide on mitigation measures that can be taken,” he said.

Later, Muhyiddin flagged-off a convoy of post-flood aid mission comprising more than 500 volunteers from the Prime Miniser’s Department and several NGOs who were tasked to clean up public facilities such as hospitals, clinics and schools in Kelantan.

These volunteers will join another 1,000 volunters already on site in Kelantan to do the massive cleaning operation.

The deputy prime minister also received aid contribution totalling RM1.5 million from several parties including the Federal Territory Islamic Affairs Council which gave RM500,000 and Tanjong Wahyu Sdn Bhd (RM1 million).
