Wei Feng, Vivian Hoo/ Woon Khe Wei keep Malaysian flag flying

KUALA LUMPUR: It was a mere walk in the park for Malaysian women’s pair in the second round of the 2015 Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) in Wuhan, China.

Vivian Hoo/Woon Khei Wei received a walkover when their opponents Aktar Shapla/Alina Sultana of Bangladesh who withdrew from the tournament today.

The pair are set to meet Ma Jin/Tang Yuanting of China in the quarter-finals round tomorrow.

Ma Jin/Tang Yuanting edged out third seeded and also world number six pair Reika Kakiiwa/Miyuki Maeda of Japan 21-13 and 21-14.

In the men’s singles, Chong Wei Feng dispatched off Artyom Savatyugin of Uzbekistan in straight sets of 21-6 and 21-9 in 21 minutes.

Wei Feng is scheduled to battle Tian Houwei of China in a quarter-final match tomorrow.

World number 12 Tian had to work hard to overcome Lee Dong Keun of South Korea before winning 17-21, 21-8 and 21-11 in one hour and 25 minutes.

Tomorrow’s match would be their fifth clash. Three of the matches were won by Wei Feng, who is currently ranked 39th.

Unfortunately, Malaysia’s sole women’s singles Tee Jing Yi was shown the exit in her first appearance after receiving a first round bye and a walkover in the second round.

Jing Yi found Sung Ji Hyun of South Korean, the world number six, too hot to handle and went down 8-21 and 11-21.

Sung, who is seeded fourth will take onWang Yihan of China who demolished Maria Febe Kusumastuti of Indonesia 21-14 and 21-9. – BERNAMA
