MALACCA: Within 30 minutes, residents at Kg Chetti here saw their houses inundated with water after a downpour.

“Normally, heavy rain would just flood the roads, but this time the water went into the house,” said Suppiah Pillay, 65, a long-time resident of the village.

Many residents were caught off guard, he said, estimating that about 35 houses were affected by the flash flood yesterday.

Besides Kg Chetti, Kg Pokok Kelapa, Kg Pengkalan Rama Pantai and Taman Rumpun Bahagia were affected.

Among the other areas near the city that were hit by the flash flood were Kg Pulai, Kg Permatang Duyung and Kg Teluk Mas, disrupting traffic flow.

Some of the roads flooded were Jalan Ong Kim Wee, Jalan Tun Ali and Jalan Hang Kasturi.

Supian Wahab, 36, from Penang, said he had to wait for an hour before he could drive through Jalan Ong Kim Wee, which was flooded at about 10.30am.

“I saw a car plunging into a drain near a temple in Jalan Gajah Berang,” he said.

In Muar, several residents of Batu 10, Kampung Paya Panjang, Sungai Raya, Pagoh, here had anxious moments yesterday as a storm hit the village, Bernama reported.

The storm, which lasted about 10 minutes, followed by hail showers, also resulted in the damage of six houses and trees being uprooted.

Resident Zulkifli Enjah, 54, said he was on his verandah when he saw a huge fog coming towards the house in the 5pm incident.

“Thank God, only a few roofs were ripped off, and my family members were not injured,” he said.

A single mother, Noriah Marzuki, 55, said that during the incident, she heard a loud noise coming from the roof and suddenly rainwater entered her house.

“My youngest child and I had to take ­refuge in the bedroom. My living room’s floor was soaked,” she said.

Pagoh Wanita Umno chief Datuk Noriah Mahat said the Pagoh Parliamentary Committee would take proactive measures to help the victims.-thestar
