‘No demos asking for PM’s resignation since 1998’

KUALA LUMPUR: Since 1998, there have not been any demonstrations specifically demanding the resignation of the prime minister, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

“According to police records, there have been no demonstrations held since 1998 to demand the resignation of the Prime Minister,” said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Zahid, who is also Home Minister, was responding via a written reply to Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (Pas-Bachok).

Marzuk had asked for the number of demonstrations demanding the resignation of the prime minister since 1998.

Marzuk also asked for the number of turnout, Federal Reserve Unit personnel, regular police, Special Branch, police operating costs and locations for each demonstration.

In Sept 1998, mass demonstrations took place as a result of the Reformasi movement, which was sparked by the sacking of then deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The demonstrations had called for the resignation of then prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. -nst
