Lorry driver in 14-vehicle pileup arrested

SHAH ALAM: The driver of the 10-tonne lorry involved in a 14 vehicle accident at Persiaran Mokhtar Dahari-Jalan Subang traffic lights yesterday, has been arrested.

Shah Alam OCPD Assistant Commissioner Shafien Mamat said the arrest was made after the driver, who fled after the 1.30pm accident, returned the scene three hours later yesterday.

The driver, aged 54 and hailing from Batang Berjuntai, is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“The urine test on the lorry driver turned out negative. Checks revealed that he had two old summonses for running a red light in 2007 and another for the offence of ferrying a load that was not properly placed in the lorry. Both summonses have yet to be settled and there were no warrants of arrest against him,” said Shafien of the investigations.

Shafien added that so far, 13 police reports have been lodged by motorists who were involved in the accident and their statements have been recorded except for the owner of a MPV who has yet to come forward.

None of the drivers or passengers involved were seriously hurt. There were no fatalities.

Shafien said the lorry would be brought to the Road Transport Department for the sand load to be weighed and sent to Puspakom to verify claims that the brakes had been faulty, as reported by the lorry driver.
