Selangor local councils not doing enough for upkeep of low-cost flats

KUALA SELANGOR: Most low-cost flats and apartments in Selangor are in a dilapidated state, says Urban WellBeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar.

He said the ministry will press on with its plans to provide facelifts for all such buildings not just in Selangor, but across the country.

The problem in Selangor, said Noh, was largely due to the local councils’ ‘hands off’ attitude in maintenance work for these buildings.

“The Menteri Besar (Datuk Seri Azmin Ali) should oversee the problems faced by the residents.

“Based on my experience, I always saw unserviceable lifts in the flats, and iron fencing left to deteriorate, ” he said after attending a ‘buka puasa’ event with the members of the JKKP of Tanjung Karang and District officer of Kuala Selangor, today.

Meanwhile, Noh who is Tanjung Karang MP said, they could expect problems in getting approvals for use of land for construction of affordable housing projects in the Klang Valley.

For example, he said, the Federal government had approved a RM3 million allocation for the construction of a Fire and Rescue Department station in Setia Alam, but the Selangor government had slapped a hefty RM4 million price tag for the land premium.-nst
