Pregnant woman arrested for attempting to steal jewellery

IPOH: A 21-year-old woman, who is six months pregnant woman, snatched two gold bracelets worth RM11,000 from a jewellery shop in Kampung Rapat here.

Her attempt was, however, short-lived as she was arrested 15 minutes later by the police after the 11.10am incident on Thursday.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Sum Chang Keong said the woman had entered the shop pretending to buy jewellery.

“The woman had worn two pieces of jewellery on her wrist and asked the 22-year-old shopkeeper for the prices.

“As the shopkeeper was using the calculator, she ran out of the shop with the jewellery,” he said here Friday.

“She then got on a Toyota Wish, driven by her 36-year-old husband,” he said, adding that police patrol cars were alerted of the incident and had searched for the vehicle.

ACP Sum said both were arrested at Taman Desa Pakatan, near Pasir Puteh, at about 11.30am.

“The woman does not have any crime record.

“Her husband has three, including two drug-related cases, and another for burglary,” he said, adding that both were from Seri Manjung.

ACP Sum said the Toyota Wish used by the couple was a cloned car, smuggled in from a neighbouring country.

“We are in the process of obtaining a remand order for them.

“The case will be investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft,” he said.-thestar
