Education Ministry satisfied with 2016 SPM exam results

ALOR SETAR: The Education Ministry is satisfied with the results of the 2016 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exams despite a slight decline in the number of students scoring all As.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid (pic) said this was based on the National Grade Point Average (NGPA) achieved this year, which was 5.10 compared with last year’s 5.15.

He, however, acknowledged there were certain areas that have to be looked into especially in the higher order thinking skills (HOTS) questions in the SPM exams.

“We have undergone three years of SPM examinations where 25% is based on HOTS since 2013. We will look and study the results so that we can work on the weaknesses,” he told a press conference during his visit to SMK Kubang Rotan here Thursday.

Mahdzir, however, said that those who failed to obtain straight As, will still have a fair chance to further their studies.

Earlier, Education director-general Tan Sri Dr Khair Mohamad Yusof said 8,647 candidates (2.13%) obtained straight As, a slight drop from 2.38% (9,721) in 2015.

It was announced that the 2016 SPM results recorded a National Grade Point Average (NGPA) of 5.10.

Dr Khair also said a smaller NGPA means that candidates did better in the examinations.-thestar
