KUALA LUMPUR: A jobless man was jailed for seven years and ordered to be caned twice for robbing a Myanmar national of RM550 and a handphone.

Sessions Court judge Mohd Zulbahrin Zainuddin meted out the sentence Friday after S. Sathiya, 29, admitted committing gang robbery on Tual Sian Sang, 27, last week.

The court ordered the jail term to start from the date of arrest, March 15.

Sathiya committed the crime with another person still at large at a hotel room in Jalan Sultan here at 6.54am on March 15.

He was charged under Section 395 of the Penal Code.

In another case, doughnut stall assistant Badlishah Adnan, 39, received the same sentence – seven years’ jail and two strokes of the rotan – after he pleaded guilty to robbing a retail shop worker of RM600 in items at knifepoint.

Mohd Zulbahrin instructed the accused to serve his sentence from March 18.

Badlishah was charged with robbing Indonesian Ahmad Sonate Usman Ski, 29, at the Rosco Global Resources retail shop in Jalan Raja Uda, Kampung Baru, here, on March 17.

He was also fined RM1,200, in default five months’ jail, for failing to produce his identity card when he was detained in Jalan Raja Muda Musa at 9pm on March 18.-thestar
