Suspected bookie in match-fixing probe remanded

PUTRAJAYA: A 49-year-old man believed to be the bookie in a match-fixing scandal involving three Malaysian Premier League footballers has been remanded for six days.

Magistrate Nik Isfahanie Tasnim Wan Ab Rahman allowed a request by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on Friday for the man to be held for further investigation.

The scrap metal shop assistant was arrested in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday evening.

Three players from the Malaysian Indian Football Association (MIFA) Premier League squad have been remanded for a week over allegations of match-fixing.

The three – a foreign import and two locals – are being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act.

Initial investigations by the MACC revealed that the players received bribes of between RM10,000 and RM30,000 from bookies to influence the outcome of matches during this season’s Premier League campaign.

The foreigner is a 29-year-old defender while the other two are a 26-year-old goalkeeper and a 27-year-old defender.-thestar
