KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 (Bernama) — The contest for the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president post saw its Federal Territory chairman Datuk Zaid Ibrahim leading with 557 votes from nine division, on the first day of election yesterday.

Party vice-president Mohamed Azmin Ali trailed with 374 votes, while another vice-president, Mustaffa Kamil, who is also Perak chairman, secured only 61 votes.

That was the result obtained on the first day of election for seats in the party”s central leadership council (CLC) for the term 2010-2013, held in four divisions in Kelantan — Tumpat, Kota Baharu, Rantau Panjang and Pasir Mas — and five divisions in Kedah, namely Alor Setar, Langkawi, Pokok Sena, Kuala Kedah and Kubang Pasu.

Political observers attributed Mohamed Azmin”s failure to secure higher votes yesterday to his busy schedule in helping to campaign in the Galas state by election in Kelantan, and the Batu Sapi parliamentary by-election in Sabah.

According to the PKR official website, 32 party divisions in Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan, Perak, Perlis and Kedah held their meetings today to choose their leaders for the CLC seat
