OUTREACH: Rosmah lauds Girl Guides for teaching underprivileged new skills

JOHOR BARU: DATIN Seri Rosmah Mansor yesterday called on the Malaysian Girl Guides Association (GGAM) to raise awareness on the importance of education among those living in the interior and rural areas.

The prime minister’s wife also lauded the Johor Girl Guides Association for helping the underprivileged acquire skills to improve their livelihood.

JGGA had taught traditional kuih-making to single mothers and sewing to the underprivileged.

Rosmah, who is the president of GGAM, was speaking at the 2014 World Memorial Day and the Girl Guides Outreach Programme at Taman Merdeka here yesterday.

The outreach programme was held in conjunction with the celebration of World Thinking Day 2014, which is usually celebrated on Feb 22, to mark friendship, advocacy and fundraising for 10 million girl guides and girl scouts from 145 countries.

The theme for this year’s World Thinking Day is “Education Opens Doors For All Boys and Girls”.

A total of RM4,719 was raised for the World Thinking Fund. The monies will channelled to five countries — St Vincent and the Grenadines, Egypt, Bangladesh, Armenia and Benin.

Present were JGGA president Tunku Fatimah Faridah Tunku Osman, her deputy Tunku Tun Aminah Sultan Ibrahim, GGAM chief commissioner Normala Baharudin and Johor menteri besar’s wife, Datin Seri Rosni Omar.

At another event at Puteri Pacific Johor Baru Hotel, here, yesterday, Rosmah handed RM25,600 to the families of the teenagers who drowned in Sungai Muar near Buloh Kasap, Segamat, on Feb 21.

The money was raised by the Welfare Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers and Johor State Elected Representatives’ Wives Association.

The families received RM2,000 from Bakti and RM1,200 from Juita, for each victim.

Rosmah also gave an undisclosed amount from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s family and handed a note of condolence from the prime minister.

“I hope the aid will alleviate the burden of the families. As a mother, I understand the heartache of losing a child,” Rosmah said.

Mariam Zam, 61, who was among the recipients, expressed her gratitude for the aid.

“This gesture means so much to me and every member of my family.”
