Police record statements of 13 people over independence rally

KUCHING: Police have recorded statements from 13 people involved in organising ‘Sarawak Freedom and Independence Walk’, including the organising chairman Peter John Jaban.

It was learnt that 13 of them were called to give their statements at the Kuching district police station, about 12 noon on Wednesday, after the event finished.

Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Head Senior Assistant Commissioner (SAC) Dev Kumar said the process to record their statements went on until late evening.

However, all of them were released after the interview session was completed, he said.

Despite been advised by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar to call off the event, the organisers insisted to go on with the plan, as to commemorate Sarawak’s independence from the British colonial on July 22, 1963.
