Consultant claims trial to insulting PM

SEPANG: A construction consultant has claimed trial to insulting the Prime Minister in a foul-mouthed Facebook rant over the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.

Syarul Ema Rena Abu Samah, 35, was accused of posting the insulting comment on a Facebook profile, Ratu Naga, on Oct 6 last year.

The comment mentioned Najib Tun Razak and the members of parliament for signing the agreement, saying it amounted to selling out the country.

The post, reproduced in the charge sheet, featured a slew of slurs, even quoting Langkawi legend Mahsuri, “kami rakyat Malaysia sumpah 7 keturunan tau!”.

According to the charge sheet, the comment which had the intent to insult another was picked up by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commissions (MCMC) monitors on Jan 28.

MCMC deputy public prosecutor Faizah Mohd Salleh confirmed that the complainant in the case was an MCMC officer.

She urged the court to set a high bail of between RM3,000 and RM7,000 due to the serious nature of the offence.

“She (Syarul Ema Rena) is accused of insulting the nation’s number one leader and the bail is needed to ensure she answers to the charge in court,” said Faizah.

Section 233(3) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 carries a maximum of one year’s jail, a RM50,000 fine, or both.

Syarul Ema Rena, who was unrepresented, pleaded for lower bail, saying she earned RM3,000 a month and would not be able to raise much cash for bail.

Sessions judge Aizatul Akmal Maharani set bail at RM7,000. He fixed March 22 for next mention.

Despite this, Syarul Ema Rena was seen smiling as she was led out of the courtroom.-thestar
