IGP gives personal assurance Maria will “not be abused” during detention

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have expressed their assurance that Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah will not be mistreated while in detention under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said Maria is being detained in conditions consistent with the Lockup Rules, the Prison Act and police’s standard operating procedures (SOPs), in accordance with international standards.

“We don’t provide hotel rooms for detainees. There are SOPs, rules and procedures that we have to adhere to.

“Whatever has been (provided to her) is in accordance with… international standards.

“I know some parties are asking us to show proof (of her humane treatment, but) that is not the way it works.

“Let us conduct the investigation, and whatever our findings are will (be) presented to the Attorney-General,” he told reporters during a press conference after a senior police rank pinning ceremony at the Bukit Aman police headquarters here.

Khalid gave his personal assurance that Maria is not being abused while under detention in the lockup.

“There will be no abuse. I will personally make sure that (there will be no abuse),” he said.
